Heroin Addiction Affects Family

Heroin addiction not only deeply affects the life of any user, but also the people around them as well.

This powerful substance damages the person physically and mentally, but also destroys relationships with close ones, especially families.

As the drug addiction progresses, the user’s main priority becomes the substance. This can often result in violent behavior towards the family or stealing from them as well, in order to buy the next dose.

There are a lot of teens that are addicted to heroin, which leaves a huge impact on their parents, making them feel powerless because of it. Many parents also struggle with their adult child abusing the substance, which is in many cases just as hard. Being involved with drugs can often lead to many criminal behaviors or risky sexual activities in order to gain money for drugs, so parents feel responsible for it and try to help and bail their child out of trouble in most of these dangerous situations.

Spouses are another group that are extremely affected and whose lives are completely changed once a drug addiction in the family occurs. Heroin abuse is a reason for numerous divorces every year, because it is extremely hard to maintain a healthy or any type of a relationship with an addict. Dishonesty, financial troubles and domestic abuse are just some of the reasons because of which these types of couples separate. Job loss and bankruptcy is just a mild way that addiction can hit a family, while in some cases even facing homelessness becomes a reality. A person married to a drug addict often has to take care of all the family duties on their own, which just adds to the already existing stress and dysfunction. In some cases a spouse might feel the need to cover and lie for their addicted wife or husband, which only drives the person into drugs more and more.
Even though there is no doubt that heroin bring a lot of pain to everyone involved, children of drug addicts are by far the most affected group for certain. During the fragile time in childhood when young people are still discovering themselves and the world, it is extremely damaging when they live in the toxic environment that drugs inevitably bring. In some instances they might go through physical or sexual abuse, which is very hard to recover from even later in life, leaving these young people with abandonment issues, low self-esteem, depression and anxiety. Studies also show that children of drug addicts are more likely to become addicts themselves later on in their lives.

It is extremely important to understand just how damaging and dangerous heroin addiction is and seek professional help right away.
